Everything We Know About Netflix’s ‘Quicksilver’ Adaptation

One of the MOST exciting announcements to come from 2024 was Callie Hart's Quicksilver, part of the Fae and Alchemy series, being picked up by publishing house Forever and now being adapted by Netflix. Quicksilver is arguably one of the most popular books to be released in 2024, dominating fantasy and romance book lists, amassing millions of mentions on social media within months of being released, and it was our Editors number one read of 2024.

It was reportedly a heated bidding war, but Netflix has officially won the rights to Callie Hart’s romantasy BookTok and Bookstagram sensation Quicksilver. The novel, as well as the author’s two other upcoming books in the Fae & Alchemy trilogy series, went for seven figures. Readers can expect to get their hands on Brimstone, book two of the Fae & Alchemy series, this November. When the Romantasy Illustrated team saw Hart's announcement, we freaked out. Hart announced the exciting news on her Instagram, writing, “‘Quicksilver’ is getting a MOVIE, guys! Netflix will be turning Fisher and Saeris’ story into the most incredible feature-length visual masterpiece, and I am officially freaking out.”

With Netflix's The Witcher coming to an end and Fate of the Winx Saga not being renewed, Netflix has needed a new fantasy show for fans to compete with Amazon's Rings of Power and soon Fourt Wing, as well as HBO's House of the Dragon. The Netflix deal is a strategic move on their part. Netflix has frustrated a lot of fantasy readers as of late with the trend of canceling their fantasy shows and movies before completing them - cues The Witcher, Winx Saga, Shadow and Bone, and more being canceled. Seeing Netflix's willingness to green-light Quicksilver is a hint that it might be revamping its approach to the fantasy genre and that they are willing to take on a romantasy. With fantasy and romance books on the rise due to BookTok and Bookstagram, it is exciting for readers to see more projects being brought to life on screen. When it comes to mainstream media, the romantasy genre is often discussed in a negative and derogatory light - especially when it comes to works of fiction that are arguably written by women and have a predominantly female audience with the female gaze in mind.

Hart is set to be the executive producer alongside Elizabeth Cantillon from the Cantillon Company, who is on board to produce. As for who else is involved in the Quicksilver movie, here’s what we know so far about the highly anticipated project and what a few of our fan casts are.

What is “Quicksilver” about?

The first book in Hart’s Fae & Alchemy series is about a 24-year-old woman named Saeris Fane who inadvertently opens a doorway between realms when she comes face-to-face with Death himself. She’s transported to another land, where she ends up binding herself to a handsome Fae warrior named Kingfisher (we like to call him Daddy). Kingfisher and Saeris must work together to save both of their kingdoms and eventually send her home.

Full Quicksilver Blurb:

From USA TODAY Bestselling Author Callie Hart comes a brand new, highly addicting enemies-to-lovers Romantasy with razor-sharp banter, heart-stopping action, and blistering hot romance that you won’t be able to put down!

Do not touch the sword.

Do not turn the key.

Do not open the gate.

In the land of the unforgiving desert, there isn’t much a girl wouldn’t do for a glass of water.

Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses, or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen’s reservoirs for as long as she can remember.

But a secret is like a knot.

Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone.

When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares…but it turns out they’re real, and Saeris has landed herself right in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed.

The first of her kind to tread the frozen mountains of Yvelia in over a thousand years, Saeris mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher, a handsome Fae warrior, who has secrets and nefarious agendas of his own. He will use her Alchemist’s magic to protect his people, no matter what it costs him… or her.

Death has a name.

It is Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate.

His past is murky.

His attitude stinks.

And he’s the only way Saeris is going to make it home.

Be careful of the deals you make, dear child.

The devil is in the details…

Note: This is an adult fantasy-romance book with themes that may not be appropriate for all ages

“I'll be grateful for every second that I can say that I belong to you, Saeris Fane. Eighty years or eighteen hours. It doesn't matter to me. It'll still be the highest honor of my life.”

Quicksilver hit the shelves on June 3, 2024. According to Deadline, the novel became a number one bestseller on Amazon and garnered over three million mentions on TikTok in its first two months of release, which prompted Forever to pick up the book and take it and the series trad. The second book in the series, Brimstone, is set to release November 18, 2025 and promises more fantasy and romance to readers. As for when the third book will be released, we expect a similar turnaround, especially now that Netflix is bringing Saeris and Kingfisher’s story to life, likely releasing late 2026. If this Editor was to speculate, she would guess that the Fae and Alchemy series would be set to air in late 2026 or 2027 to continue to follow and support the success of this series.

Brimstone Coming November 18, 2025

Duty. Blood. Honour. Power.

Saeris Fane doesn't want power. The very last thing she needs is her name whispered on an entire court's lips, but now that she's been crowned queen of the Blood Court, she's discovering that a queen's life is not her own. A heavy weight rests upon her shoulders.

Her ward - and her brother - need her back in her homeland . . . but the changes that have strengthened Saeris have also made her weak. Born under blazing suns, Saeris will surely die if she makes her way home through the Quicksilver. Which means that, once again, she must send someone else in her stead . . .

'Keep your mouth shut. Stick to the shadows. And for the love of all seven Gods, do NOT crack any jokes.'

Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate has defeated armies and survived all manner of horrors, but traveling back to Zilvaren with Carrion Swift might just be the death of him. The male just will not shut up. Hidden dangers await them down the narrow alleyways of the Silver City. Unfolding secrets pose impossible threats. Fisher must wrangle the smuggler and accomplish his goals quickly if he wants to see his mate again.

A darkness falls across Yvelia. The realm and their friends are in danger. Together, Saeris and Fisher will pass through fire and brimstone to save them.

Who is developing Netflix’s “Quicksilver”?

As mentioned, Cantillon—most recently the executive producer of Fede Alvarez’s “Alien: Romulus”—Hart, and Netflix are currently developing the movie.

Who is in the cast of Netflix’s “Quicksilver”?

The Quicksilver movie was announced on Dec. 3, 2024, so it’s too early to expect casting announcements. Based on other adaptations for the streamer, we will likely not be hearing updates from Netflix until mid-2025 or seeing a show until 2027.

How are the characters described?

Saeris Fane, the female protagonist of Quicksilver, will be vital to the show's success. It's exciting to contemplate who will be tapped to play Kingfisher, her charming, mysterious, shadow daddy love interest. Described as tall, striking, and in possession of a classically chiseled face, Kingfisher is detailed enough to envision him, but also leaves plenty open to interpretation for the show. Callie Hart herself has made comments on imagining Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Adam Driver for the role of Kingfisher. While actors like Henry Cavill or Aaron Taylor-Johnson might initially come to mind, many other actors would be perfect for the role and could do justice to the character. While Kingfisher is dangerous, it doesn't take long for him to melt the hearts of the reader and Saeris. It wouldn't be surprsing for Netflix to cast actors that we have seen in other shows and movies, with an established career. In looking at other Netflix Originals, they seem to bring on less-known or smaller actors, but either way, the cast with Hart on as a Producer is sure to bring this story to life.

Who do fans want to see cast in “Quicksilver”?

While there are no casting announcements, we have seen a few fan casting and have some of our own that would be a dream to see. Whether any of these are right or not, it was fun playing with the castings for Quicksilver and we are excited to see who Netflix casts.
